You tube and its features...
G'day everyone If you have a Youtube A/C and have videos uploaded , i suggest next time your logged in there to take a peek at this great feature. On your home page click "Accounts" , then once on that page click "youtube insight" (about half way down the page) You will get a page showing all the data and information on just who and where your videos are been watched. There are some great charts ,figures and pie chart showing a complete breakdown of your clips as in *Age group * Location * Gender watching ect. For example my pie chart reads : *75% male and 25% female watching. *Age group is in 55-65 bracket. *USA and UK the highest rate of viewers. If your never viewed this page on your A/C ,its well worth a look. Regards Daniel :)

Nice One Dan I didn't know this existed. My profile is almost identical - although more are looking at my garden railway than my pianola. I don't know what this says about us and the two hobbies, except that both are male dominated :D Cheers Neil

The way you present material is crucial for the audience balance. It is entirely possible to make mechanical music vids with appeal beyond male/over50s. One of my aims (in promoting the PPG and player piano etc etc) is to bridge this demographic audience divide. When you make videos, design websites, take photos, produce CD albums or whatever you do always think of your target audience demographic. Don't cater too hard for the enthusiast nutter types : they'll always find you even if you hide. It's quite hard to go back and cover the exact same material but make it appealing for say an under 30s audience split 50/50 between men and women. You don't need glitzy graphics. whizzing screen texts and fancy transitions to achieve this either. Think hard about what you are showing and how you do it. The absurdist "Pretentions of Mechanical Music" I did with Julian was primarily made to have a swipe at people who don't really ever grasp these concepts. #1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SP22TU-6BQ and #2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpxOiMt20lc I personally don't expect a million+ views for anything mechanical music on YouTube but I do sincerely reckon it can be done : and with a budget of absolutely zero! My own music related account (there are a few others I run!) has recently notched up 100,000+ views since Jan 07. Get your cameras working and uploading!

males represent 74% on my account, most viewers are from the Netherlands and Germany, followed by the USA. the 55-65 age group is best represented, but on a 3th place is 0-18, which surprises me.... it also surprises me that some of my really bad vids like the Brahms hungarian dance no. 5 gets so many views, but that has probably to do with it being a famous piece, Id love to see how many of these viewers actually watched the whole awefull clip....

When i make my clips, i do follow some strick rules ive made for myself , for example: #The music sound is the most important thing , so i use the highest setting on my camera for audio , this will give me the clearest sound , the only down side is the clip cant be as long as the MB's per minute are doubled. #I like to record a different variety of music that suits a wider range of people then just those interested in DA Classical rolls.Recording some basic QRS 88 note rolls of everyday/modern songs, ive managed to grab the attention of a younger audience who know the song but have no idea what a player is. Soon the questions start and the interest grows , this leads them to exploring other clips and in time ,they then discover the better "reproduction" rolls and the difference in sound and expression. #I have also a bunch of clips here that i filmed and edited and after viewing ,just didn't pass my standards (i like everything just right) so they have been canned to a folder not to be posted. #Besides the music , i try to show different angles of the workings in some clips , some people like it and some don't.But i feel the mechanics behind the panels are doing the work and are just a marvelous combination of balanced workings that should also be shown on just what they do. In closing i find the biggest reward is when you get a message from an unknown person who has taken the time to write and say thanks for sharing the clip/song , they love the song , enjoyed seeing it been played by itself and then start asking more about the hobby. Daniel :)
