Neil, It is indeed the same model as my burr-walnut upright. I have seen two varieties of this model, with slightly different frames. This one is the same as mine. The other (older) has a few more decorative lines cast onto it. By the look of it (the pictures aren't all that clear), this has an American-made double-valve stack with both treble and bass fed from the left-hand end. My piano seems not to have been fitted out until the 1920s and received the standard single-valve London-made stack. Julian

Sorry for been such a stick in the mud , but why is that roll "king of Zulus" going for such a high price?.It looks no different to the tatty boxed rolls i have here sitting on my shelf

reliance_rolls- 06-22-2008

I dropped out at $100.. The reason it's going for such a high price? It's a rare, genuine blues performance played by the composer. (I've heard the roll and it's real negro lowdown blues - fantastic).

duo-art-dan- 06-22-2008

Thanks Rob , so i take it that not many were made or survived.

Julian Dyer- 06-22-2008

I believe King of the Zulu's blues played by Richard M Jones has (or at least had) only one known copy. It was the only roll he made, odd for somebody who was fairly significant in his day. That one copy was owned by the late Ed Sprankle, and I was permitted to play it when visiting a few years ago. Either it's his roll, which seems unlikely, or there's another copy now! Julian

Thats an amazing price and story for the roll!...thanks for sharing. Is there a known list , or could we make one on here?: A list that names rare or sort after rolls?. Who knows , its possible that a poster on these forums may have something sitting in storage and have no idea to the true value. If by some miracle i had the King of Zulus in my collection and someone asked for it , i would of just posted it to them and not thought anything about it....lol. Daniel :)

Probably THE most desired missing rolls are three of the couple dozen or so Jelly Roll Morton recorded for Vocalstyle. These three were issued and appear in catalogues of the time, but have never turned up. Mamanita Blues (Vocalstyle Hand Played Instrumental #50478) Kansas City Stomp (#50486) New Orleans Blues (#50508) As Frank Himpsl wrote some years ago.. The label is a pale blue (solid color on white) inscribed Vocalstyle at top. All of the tunes are original compositions by Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton, and they are inscribed as "played by Jelly Roll Morton" on the bottom of the roll/box label. Missing rolls still do turn up - four of the Morton rolls were missing until 1997, when a collector discovered 'The Pearls', which only leaves three to go! And 2 years ago I discovered the final missing roll played by Scott Joplin, which had been searched for carefully for decades. That said, there's plenty rolls I'd love to hear - top of the list would be the Red Welte recordings of 'Maple Leaf Rag' and 'Pleasant Moments'.

Hey Thanks Robert :) Im making up a list and will start noting these down for reference , not that im ever going to come across but id rather keep a list of the known "sort afters". Daniel.

Small midi operated pipe organ in cabinet. Something a little different , and very curious to hear how it sounds. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Small-44-Note-Midi-operated-Pipe-Organ-in-hifi-Cabinet_W0QQitemZ140241809487QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item140241809487&_trkparms=72%3A638%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Rob, if it's anything like "Kulukem Rag" and "Kitten on the Keys" on the T100 then don't hold your breath in anticipation! You'll be in for some serious disappointment! If you haven't heard these basically try and imagine what Chaminade playing Zez Confrey might sound like....LOL

You've just piqued my curiosity about the the Welte rolls now, Adam! I'd love to hear that mangling of Kitten on the Keys! The only Red Welte rags I've heard are the few that Terry Smythe has scanned, and the MIDI expression emulation is pretty dire (due to the scarcity of instruments to compare with, I'd suspect). Now, is there anyone in the UK that's snapping up these 99p players and stockpiling them? An acquaintance of mine here in NZ does just that (hell of a nice guy, with a very understanding partner!) He buys pretty much all the players that are for sale below about $300NZ and travels all around the North Island in an old hearse converted into a tow wagon to pick them up! Last count he had over 70... and was renting two houses to keep them in. I applaud his efforts, since I suspect a lot of them would be gutted or junked if it wasn't for him.

Adam Ramet- 07-01-2008

yes, there are few nutters who stockpile, hoard and buy up cheap instruments here in the UK with pathological compulsion also! In the bigger picture this is probably counterproductive as it removes homeless instruments from general circulation thus making the instrument even less common to the general public and compounding the general decline and fading from memory of the player piano. Sellers often threaten to "smash them up and send them to the dump" as we know to encourage a sale to an enthusiast. Let them I say : call their bluff. Let them waste an afternoon and risk injury to life and limb. Let them take it to the local dump. In doing this probably about 25 people along the way, at the hardware shop, the dump and down the pub (for retelling the whole story later) will learn about the player piano - far more than a silent sale to one loony hoarder.
