Chipped ivory key repair method Hi Everyone,
I have come up with a method to repair chipped ivory keys that is very successful, and would like to share:
Materials needed: An old ivory key top or bone, a file, two pac epoxy resin (clear), greaseproof paper, sticky tape and a plastic spatula.
Simply fold the greaseproof paper into an L shape and shelf it under the key overhang that is chipped, sticky tape it on.
File the ivory or bone into a fine powder and mix it in with the epoxy resin until it forms a thick paste, try to mix enough powder in to colour match the key as closely as possible.
With the plastic spatula, feed an amount of paste equivilent to the chip onto the shelf of paper, then smooth it back into the chip. Leave for several hours to cure. When you remove the paper, a very fine sanding is all it takes and the chips are no longer noticable.
Treat one key first to ensure you like the result before doing the lot!!
I like the pearlescent qualities of epoxy as it closely resembles ivory.
Ofcourse you need to be careful. Hope this assists. :)

Great, I like the idea, luckily my ivories are all very good, not a single chip, and also they're still white... not used a lot I guess. The Hupfeld I restored is a mess however. I'll give it a try someday if the owner agrees and I'll post the result.
thanks
